1. Hospitals
Hospitals are usually universal healthcare facilities, offering a wide range of medical, surgical and psychiatric services to their patients. Hospital departments are called units and can be one of two types:

Intensive care units: They are the units that handle all emergency injuries and illnesses. These units usually receive patients in critical and life-threatening situations.
Non-intensive care units: They handle scheduled care, like surgeries, childbirth, post-operation rehabilitation and other non-emergency healthcare situations. Also, patients that have been successfully treated in intensive care units and had their condition stabilized are usually moved to non-intensive care units to continue their rehabilitation.
Hospitals can also specialize in various areas of medicine. Some of the specializations can be:

Acute care: Provide medical services for acute medical issues, such as short-term illnesses and injuries
Critical access: Small institutions, typically in rural areas, that offer basic healthcare services
Psychiatric: Medical institutions that specialize in offering psychiatric care, including inpatient services that consist of non-stop supervision performed by trained psychiatrists
Children's hospitals: Facilities that offer inpatient and outpatient medical services to people under the age of 18

2. Clinics and medical offices
Clinics are healthcare facilities that typically specialize in one or more areas of medicine and that offer outpatient treatment, meaning that they don't usually provide overnight stay for their patients. There are many healthcare facilities of different types and sizes that fit this description, with most of them being private practices, group practice settings or larger clinics that may be affiliated with a hospital.

Unlike hospitals, which cover multiple healthcare specialties, clinics usually focus on one health area and provide expert preventative care and diagnoses. Some of the most widely-encountered specialized clinics are dental clinics, mental health clinics, community health clinics that offer free services to underserved populations and physical therapy clinics where people recovering from physical injuries can perform rehabilitation exercises.

3. Nursing homes
Nursing homes are facilities that provide 24-hour care for elderly or disabled people. They can either provide generalized care for any of these categories or specialize in a single area, like patients with severe mental illnesses or those in need of constant care due to a severe physical issue. As a general rule, the types of illnesses and injuries treated in nursing homes are not serious and urgent enough for hospitalization but are too severe to be treated at home.

4. Mental health and addiction treatment centers
Mental health treatment facilities can either be general institutions that offer psychiatric and psychological care to their patients or specialize in one specific area of mental health. These facilities can offer both inpatient and outpatient care, depending on the severity and stage of their patients' mental health rehabilitation process.

Addiction treatment centers typically handle issues with uncontrolled consumption of alcohol and various drugs. However, other types of addictions, like gambling, video games, shopping and others are also treated at these facilities.

5. Birth centers
Birth centers are healthcare facilities specialized in childbirth. They typically aim to offer the mother and the family a comfortable and affordable birth environment. Unlike hospitals, birthing centers do not typically employ specialized staff for difficult births, such as surgeons that are prepared to perform C-section surgeries. For this reason, birth centers are typically only an option for scheduled pregnancies that do not have any known complication or risk.
