Microsoft Extends Office Support for Windows 10 After Backlash

Microsoft has announced a three-year extension for Office LTSC 2024 and Office 365 support on Windows 10, pushing the end date to October 2029. This decision came after sharp criticism from businesses and IT departments who weren’t ready to migrate to Windows 11. Microsoft originally planned to end support in 2026, aligning with Windows 10’s lifecycle.

The policy shift affects Office LTSC 2024 and Microsoft 365’s cloud-based versions, both of which were initially bound to Windows 11 for future support. Many companies pushed back, citing compatibility issues, budget limits, and a reluctance to move to a newer OS still missing key hardware support.

With over 70% of global enterprise desktops still running Windows 10, IT admins argued Microsoft’s original move would break essential workflows and accelerate forced upgrades. The backlash forced Microsoft to reconsider its stance.

Microsoft will now continue updates and security patches for Office apps on Windows 10 through October 14, 2029. Windows 10 itself still reaches end-of-life on October 14, 2025, but users can now safely run newer Office versions longer.
